Samsung Announces Exynos 880 – To Compete Against Snapdragon 765G

Since the premium mid-ranger Smartphones are high in demand, Samsung introduces a new chipset in the market. It is Samsung Exynos 880 which said to compete against Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G. This chipset includes dedicated NPU(Neural Processing Unit) to handle AI processings and 5G support to boost internet connectivity. It is the Vivo Y70s, becomes first to feature Exynos 880 before any other Samsung devices.

Exynos 880 CPU Cores

The chipset said to have two Arm’s Cortex-A77 cores which clock at 2.0GHz, are responsible for handling advance or intensive processing. While there are six Arm’s Cortex-A55 cores that are clocked at 1.8GHz, responsible for efficient power management for long battery life. This octa-core configuration is based on 8nm FinFET architecture which is more efficient than Exynos 911.

AI and Smart Processing

In terms of processing, Samsung Exynos 880 gets smarter, the chipset includes a dedicated NPU(Neural Processing Unit) and DSP(Digital Signal Processing). Thereafter, it further enhanced AI capabilities to another level. It supports LPDDR4X Main memory and UFS 2.1 for secondary memory. Further, the NPU and DSP of the processor share a controller and DMA(Direct Memory Access) which enables faster memory management that leads to a lag-free experience.

Exynos 880 Image processing

Along with heavy-duty computing, image processing also gets better with its advanced ISP(Image Signal Processing). Exynos 880 supports five individual camera sensors, and capable of running three camera sensors simultaneously. Sensors including a single camera of max 64MP and dual camera of each 20MP. Which leads to more AI capabilities in camera department. Further, it can record and play 4K videos at 30FPS in multiple formats like HEVC, H.264, and VP9.

GPU intensive processing

As far as GPU intensive processing is concerned, the chipset coupled with Arm’s Mali G76 MP5 GPU. From the company side, they said with the advanced graphics APIs this chipset is capable of delivering high-performance 3D rendering. That reduces the load on the CPU and more focused on the GPU for delivering high frame rates during GPU intensive processing.

Connectivity and Networking

For the connectivity, it includes a 5G Celluar modem. Capable of supporting 5G’s sub 6Ghz bands which leads to the download speed up to 2.55Gbps and an upload speed of 1.28Gbps. Furthermore, for LTE bands it includes Cat.16 with 5CA (Carrier Aggregation) and Cat.18 with 2CA (Carrier Aggregation). That leads to 1Gbps download and 200Mbps upload speed on the LTE networks. Along with Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, and FM Radio connectivities are included.
