Huawei P Smart 2021 unveiled with Kirin 710A: The return of Kirin SoC?

The Chinese tech giant Huawei has unveiled a brand new smartphone series in Europe. The debut with a moniker Huawei P Smart 2021, while 2021 still a three months way. The phone falls under the mid-range segment offering the Huawei’s own Kirin 710A at the helm of the phone. Back in May, the Huawei subsidiary Hisilicon was mass-producing the Kirin 710A SoCs. This chip is the first among all other Kirin ships to be manufactured by Shanghai-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC). Whereas, the original Kirin 710 was manufactured by TSMC. The Kirin 710 was fabricated in the 12nm process, while the new Kirin 710A is fabricated in the 14nm FinFET process. The first phone to have this SoC was Honor Play 4T that was also printed “Powered by SMIC FinFET”.

Now, Huawei unveiling the P Smart 2021 with the latest Kirin 710A. This happened due to the US sanctions the whole production ships from Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to SMIC. Kirin 710 was configured at 4X Cortex-A73 at 2.2GHz & 4X Cortex-A53 at 1.7GHz. Whereas, the 14nm SMIC Kirin 710A is less efficient as well as less CPU speed compared to the 12nm TSMC. The CPU base frequency is dropped to 2.0GHz from 2.2GHz. As per the connectivity, it retains the 4G LTE Cat.12/13 module that has the support of dual 4G LTE and VoLTE support.

The phone built around an FHD+ resolution IPS LCD display of size 6.67″ inch with a punch hole at the top centre. Underneath the punch hole, there is has an 8MP selfie camera sensor. Around the back, there is has an array of four camera sensors vertically aligned beside an LED flash. The camera sensors in the array are a 48MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth camera.

Under the hood, there it has on octa-core system from Hisilicon Kirin 710A. Further, it has bundled with Mali-G51 MP4 GPU and 4GB of RAM while it has 128GB of onboard storage support. Furthermore, the storage expansion support is there through a dedicated microSD card slot. The system on the phone runs on EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10 without the support of google play services. Whereas, the system fueled by a 5000mAh battery that draws power trough a 22.5W fast charging mechanism.

As per the connectivity, it has dual 4G LTE support along with Wi-Fi 5. Whereas, the rest of the connectivity includes a USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, Side-mounted fingerprint scanner and other required sensors including GPS, Gyro, E-Compass etc.

Price and availability

The phone has been unveiled in Europe with a price tag of EUR 229 (around ₹19,700) for the 4GB+128GB storage option. Whereas, the phone has offered in three colour options to choose from Midnight Black, Crush Green, and Blush Gold.
